Today I was asked to meet with promoters for a particular venue and discuss a potential event hosting old school music with an added feature, "break dancers."
"
OK let me be clear, this past year alone we had 2, yes TWO events that attempted the same exact thing. Hyped with all the bells and whistles
....
ummmm
....
it went out with a whimper. TKO'd in the first round
"
That said, the notion was quickly discarded. Facts are facts.
Lose money
as they say. Right as white on rice. Both simply cannot co-exist in the same line up and time slot. Keep it seperate and real
Old School has never lost its appeal throughout the generations. One can toss, flip, techno, scramble, scratch and synthesize it but can never be replaced. An original to the core. Why? Its from the core. Core of the soul, body and mind. Many just don't get it. We're talking back in d'day when music depended entirely on vocals rather than today's voices on the flip side. C'mon y'all letz be realz. Dr Suess was the original rapper
the original Vanilla Ice shaka laka BOOM!!
Let me break down the timeline as I "see" it
post disco era has sound tracks becoming more common in place of instruments and band members
If you can talk you can rap
the 90's produced a hybrid rap/pop movement in the industry and labeled it hip hop
once considered thug clothing is now hyped as the in(mate) brand to wear
athletic wear became 2nd skin
GQ look phased out along with the famous Playboy apparel
Those that do "make it" in the industry now sport GQ wear, bling and all that says, "check me out I am one bad mofo" at awards & various high profile events
Lyrics and groovability made way for anger, resentful and militant type beat and wording
So if one's norm is to dance THAT way to THAT type of beat and wording, then how does one express sensuality and romanticism? The best I see nowadays is some floor humping ala
chih wah wah
....would make poor Marvin turn over in his grave
Dancers of the ensuing generation(s) found it difficult to relate to such and went back in time and snared break dancing out of our treasure chest of memories. They made it a one size fit all movement. Hence the inability to dance to multiple genres. Our break dancing was for a specific theme and groove. It did NOT evolve. What was original involuntarily morphed with added pieces of kibbles & bits. Took some of MJ some of MC Hammer toss in some James Brown, pop & lock, robot and then promptly named themselves B-boys aka beat boys. Take a good look at the alpha males next time you head out to check out where your "kid" is going out to? Look for any if any, B-girls on the floor? Point in this...Jose got kicked off SYTYCD cuz dat b-boy couldn't mooooove and grooooove. Exposed for his one-dance-fits-all, dance mentality. At least back in our day it was just another style in our dance arsenal should the 8-track/cassette groove came on.
The challenge back then was to be able to dance multiple styles AND to any genre/beat that popped up in the soul train line up. Thus SYTYCD's popularity can be traced back to the old school way. *snap snap*
soooooooo FOR THE RECORD...
please don't invite nor expect me to attend such a mix and match event. Its one or the other....besides me no like folks dressed like waatevah wen fall out da closet
'nuff said
